Corrections log

When something on a page turns out to be wrong, it is fixed and listed here with the date. Pages and examples mentioned here link to their current version.

Third review: explanations, error rules and report dates

  • LET: a LET name overrides a name from the Name Manager with the same name inside that formula. The page said LET names shadow nothing. A name that looks like a cell reference is still rejected.

  • FIND: a step in the English walkthrough contained a sentence about the Dutch text. It was removed.

  • ROUNDDOWN: when calculated minutes come out as 479.99999999999994, ROUNDDOWN keeps 7 hours and TEXT rounds the remaining minutes up to 60, so the cell shows 7:60. The page said 7:59.

  • TEXTBEFORE: instance_num 0 gives #VALUE!, and a number larger than the number of delimiters gives #N/A (or if_not_found, when you supplied it). The page said both give an error without telling which.

  • SUBTOTAL: the example filtered to periods 11 and 12 called them the weeks around year end. They are the last two months of the year.

  • VALUE: the pitfall about a character you cannot see now points to the TRIM page for finding a non-breaking space, and to the Master example for the trailing minus.

  • TRIM: the note on the five test cells said they look identical on screen. Only A3 is visibly indented; the other differences cannot be seen.

  • Dutch argument names in running text now use an underscore, like in the formula bar (aantal_decimalen, zoeken_matrix). Several awkward or broken sentences were rewritten, for example in TRIM, VALUE and FILTER.

  • Receivables aging combination: the days overdue now count from a report date typed in H3 (30 September 2026), not from TODAY(). The total no longer changes when the workpaper is opened later.

Second review: numbers, version claims and audit examples

  • DAYS: the advanced example now uses serial number 46025 and returns -3. It said 46026 and -4.

  • COUNTIFS: the overlapping bands add up to 10, not 9, because 500 and 5000 are each counted twice.

  • Excel versions: RANDARRAY, XLOOKUP and spilled results need Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365. TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER and TAKE need Excel 2024 or Microsoft 365. The MAXIFS and MINIFS notes now say Excel 2019 or later.

  • IFERROR: the advanced example now notes that Excel 2019 and earlier need Ctrl+Shift+Enter for the array version.

  • NETWORKDAYS: the step that explains the dollar signs now names cell D4 and gives 7 instead of 5, and the beginner pitfall about holidays was reworded.

  • PROPER: the example about initials now reads "JP becomes Jp".

  • MATCH: the hint for match_type now says "or equal" and states the sort direction each setting needs.

  • TRIM and TRUNC: the advanced examples now start with the correct formula, and the weaker version is shown as a pitfall. The INDIRECT Master example now uses a sheet name typed in a cell.

  • Audit examples: the audited client no longer appears as its own counterparty, and invented names of the same length replace it where a result depends on the text. Debtor codes in the SUBSTITUTE example are now D codes. The customer receipt in the postings-per-account combination is credited to 1300 Debiteuren, and that combination was recalculated. The invoices-per-supplier scenario was reworded, and the duplicates-across-exports example was retitled.

  • Sentences that described what Microsoft's own pages say were removed from 13 pages, because we cannot keep them in step with those pages.

  • Glossary: the entry for argument now says that the separator follows the Windows regional setting. The About page says that separators follow the choice in the header.

First review: wrong numbers and wrong statements

  • INDIRECT: a pitfall gave 17,236.25 as a result. The correct figure is 16,536.

  • CLEAN: the character count in the example was wrong and was recalculated.

  • IFNA: the example pointed at the wrong cell. It now refers to C5.

  • MID: the list of results shown for the example was wrong and was corrected.

  • MROUND: the factor in the comparison of the two amounts was corrected to about 18 times.

  • RAND: the threshold, and the statement about which invoice can never be drawn, were corrected.

  • REPT: row 6 was missing from the example data and was added.

  • EXACT: the claim that comparing a number with text returns FALSE was removed.

  • FILTER: when Excel compares text with numbers, text counts as greater. The pitfall had it the wrong way round.

  • TEXTAFTER: what the function returns when the delimiter is not found was corrected. The Master examples of TEXTBEFORE and TEXTAFTER now test for empty text with IF before calling the function; their results did not change.

  • INT and WEEKDAY: Excel converts date text such as 2025-12-25 into a date, so the error examples that said otherwise were wrong. They were replaced.

  • CHOOSECOLS: a negative column number counts from the right.

  • TOROW: the availability by Excel version was corrected.

  • HSTACK: fixed ranges do not grow with the data. The page now says so.

  • LET: the claims that LET makes XLOOKUP and LOWER recalculate faster were removed.

  • VSTACK: the variation no longer pads the result with #N/A.

  • Receivables aging combination in Dutch: the argument called zoekmodus is now called overeenkomstmodus, the name used for match_mode. The lists of functions used in several combinations now include SORT, XMATCH and ISNA.

  • CONCAT: the example about leaving out hyphens now says that line 12 of entry 25-0007 can collide with line 2 of entry 25-00071 in the same journal. It said line 7 and another journal.

  • COUNTIF: the scenario with 18-digit references said the formula flags almost every row. It flags every row.

  • INDEX: the scenario said that three codes differ only in the order of their digits. It is two: NL-4510 and NL-4501. The introduction now says that the two-way lookup works in every version with MATCH and from Excel 2021 with XMATCH.

  • LEFT: the example formula pointed at A2 where it had to point at A4.

  • OR, TEXTSPLIT and SORTBY: three pitfalls claimed more than Excel guarantees. FILTER with OR as the include argument returns #VALUE! or a wrong result. TEXTSPLIT does not split each cell of a range separately. A text amount in the sort key makes the order unreliable or the result fail. The TEXTSPLIT pitfall about a space after a comma now wraps the whole result in TRIM.

  • ROUNDDOWN: the cell reference $E$2 in the debit and credit pitfall is now $H$1. The statements about floating point now say "can" instead of "does", because it depends on the numbers.

  • SEQUENCE: the sentence about rows before columns no longer compares with A1 notation.

  • IFERROR: the example of a text amount now uses 1250 EUR instead of 1.250,00, which Excel reads as a number with Dutch regional settings.

  • Shortcuts: the Dutch name of the Review tab is Controleren, no longer Review.
